20 Years of Continuous Service – Acoustic banners

The summer of 2019 is a significant point in the history of Triple E - the 20-year anniversary of the very first VariBanner installation. Eighteen VariBanners were installed at the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra’s CBSO Centre in the heart of Birmingham and are in constant use, fine-tuning the acoustics of the Justham Auditorium for every performance.

Roger Fox, of the world recognised theatre consultancy Theatreplan, wanted to find a company to design, build and install eighteen double sided, 12 m long by 2.5 m wide banners which allow the tuning of the Justham Auditorium in line with the specifications set by Acoustician Russell Johnson of Artec.

Artec, who also engineered the sound for the Birmingham Symphony Hall, required the double face wool serge banners to cover much of the wall space in the venue, which provides rehearsal and administrative facilities for the orchestra, it’s players and it’s choruses along with a 300 seat performance capacity.

Triple E met the specification requirements by providing a single wall mounted custom control panel that is able to select any combination of the individually controllable VariBanners and set reconfigurable intermediate limits in addition to the integrated top and bottom limits, providing maximum flexibility of the space.

The VariBanners are raised and lowered by a flat stainless steel band that wraps around a pile-on winch. The band runs through the intermediary slats, hidden from view by the face fabric, and is fixed to the bottom slat which gathers the fabric layers as it raises into the housing.

Casings for both the VariBanner and VariRoller ranges can be wall or ceiling mounted and can be finished to hide behind fascia or to complement a design scheme. Removable panels can be installed for fitting and maintenance using hidden fixings.

We are incredibly proud of our involvement in the CBSO project as our VariBanners have been in constant use since 1999 with very little maintenance and no need for a Triple E call out. Many other projects for our variable acoustic banner products, VariBanner and VariRoller, have followed, specified by the leading names in entertainment space engineering for venues around the world.
